Laser Music

Tim Walsh

Welcome to the site for Laser Music! It is currently under construction - here is some information to get you started...

What is Laser Music? This is the term laserist Tim Walsh uses to describe the type of music he likes best - music, generally instrumental, that begs or screams for lasers to be shown along with it.

Tim has released a CD called The Amazing Crystal Laser Voyage - this is a great example of laser music. Tim wrote all of the music to accompany a full length laser show.

"Ever since I saw my first production of Laserium, I have wanted to create my own immersive laser experience" says Walsh. "I wanted a piece of music that would last about an hour, and give myself a wide range of rhythms, moods, and colors with which to explore the wide variety of laser effects available in a totally dark environment."

Walsh explains further: "In discussing the idea with my colleagues in laser show work, principally Scott Wade, we decided that the experience that I was looking for was a journey or voyage. I decided that it had to be really amazing, or it was not worth all of the time and effort that this work would take. I was also fooling around with playing music on crystal bowls at the time, so I decided that the work should be called the Amazing Crystal Laser Voyage."

"While it turns out that there is no crystal bowl music in the piece, it has come to pass that the heart of contemporary laser shows is a tiny crystal called a Poly Chromatic Acousto Optic Modulator, or PCAOM for short. This crystal enables the colors of a white laser to change instantaneously under computer control. I also use several crystal based effects in the laser show - they are perfect for the darker moments of the show.

The laser show uses stereoscopic 3D graphics, in which the audience wears polarized 3D glasses. Performances indoors are done with a full color Argon-Krypton mixed gas laser. Performances outdoors can also use high power YAG lasers.

Other examples of laser music that Walsh has used over the years include music by Jean Michel Jarre, Tomita, Pink Floyd, and many forms of electronic dance music, especially Trance.
